Full-time Accompanist

at St. Stephen's UMC in Houston Metro Area

Number and times of Sunday services: 11:00 am.
Midweek rehearsals: One (additional rehearsals will be called before choral events); Thursdays 7:30 - 8:45

Duties for this position:
1. Weekly Sunday morning traditional worship service.
2. Chancel Choir practice sessions.
3. Funeral services (held in the sanctuary). - negotiable if working elsewhere
4. Special Lenten and Holy Week services.
5. Special Advent/Christmas services.
6. Special Communion services.
7. On and off site worship activities and special events.
8. Weddings scheduled at St. Stephen’s (paid at the standard fee established in the wedding policy of the church.)
9. The Organist will select the music for the weekly Prelude and Postlude, as well as an occasional offertory, with the understanding that a variety of music and/or composers must be used. The Organist/Pianist will work with the Pastor of Music and Worship and the Senior Pastor to develop greater interest and participation in music for the worship settings.
10. Ability to play the keyboard with contemporary band at 8:30 am service would be a plus, but not required. Contemporary band rehearsals are Sunday morning at 7:30.

Requirements/qualifications for this position: The Organist/Pianist must support congregational song and have the ability to accompany ensembles or soloists. He or she should serve the congregation as a servant leader, educator and essential musician of this congregation. “The obligation of servant leadership is the forming of Christian disciples in the covenant community of the congregation; This involves instructing and guiding Christian disciples in their witness to Jesus Christ in the world through acts of worship, devotion, compassion and justice under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. John Wesley described this as ‘watching over one another in love.’”(Book of Discipline, ¶115) As an educator, the Organist/Pianist will teach music and explain liturgical concepts. As a musician, the Organist/Pianist will be diligent in preparation and performance, and will cooperate with others to provide and enable the highest possible standard of worship in this congregation. The Pastor of Music and Worship will have the final authority in deciding what instrument will be best suited for accompanying. Sight reading skills are a prerequisite. The Organist/Pianist must be able to direct the choir or small ensembles as needed and as requested by the Pastor of Music and Worship.

Instrumental resources: 14 rank e-p and direct valve organ, Yamaha grand piano, Roland XV-88 electric keyboard
