Part-time Church Music Director

Director of Music
University Christian Church in Austin, Texas, seeks to be a dynamic, inclusive community living out the love of Jesus the Christ through thoughtful worship, compassionate service, and spiritual growth.
University Christian Church is seeking a part-time Director of Music to direct its choir and bell choirs and to oversee the church’s music program and ministries. As described more fully below, the position’s duties will require approximately 20 hours a week. The candidate selected will become a part of UCC’s long history of excellence in its music programs.
Music and the Arts
• Plan and conduct a year-round program of church music for Chancel Choir and Bell Choir, including children and youth seasonally as appropriate, and in consultation with the Senior Minister and other staff as necessary.
• Plan music for one weekly worship service in coordination with the Senior Minister and other staff, including seasonal worship services.
• Develop seasonal music and special performances for the purpose of enhancing and enriching the worship and spiritual life of the congregation and the community.
• Coordinate music programming, including choirs, soloists, and orchestra when used.
• Foster an environment of Christian community within the choirs.
• Continue relationship with the University of Texas Butler School of Music as appropriate.
Personnel
• Recruit new choir members from among the church membership and beyond.
• Recruit, hire and supervise student scholarship singers (Choral Scholars).
• Recruit, hire and supervise Section Leaders as needed (within budgetary limits).
• Lead recruitment of and supervise church organist.
• Secure any contract musicians deemed necessary for the effective performance of the UCC music ministry.
• Conduct regular evaluations of the music staff, maintaining high performance levels at all times.
Fiscal Oversight
• Select and purchase new music for worship and special occasions, providing for the ongoing maintenance of the music library in accord with UCC purchasing procedures.
• Maintain all equipment related to the music program, including robes, instruments, music stands, and hand bells, and assist in purchase in accord with UCC purchasing procedures.
• Serve as fiscal officer for the music program, administering the disbursement of funds for the program within budgeted guidelines, and making requests for future music budget allocations.
Building Use
• Maintain the Choir Room, hand bell rehearsal rooms, and choir area as well as provide for security of the church facilities during rehearsal periods, including unlocking and locking the building and maintaining appropriate and proper energy conservation measures.
• Consult with administrative staff regarding building use relating to recitals and other music events.
In Addition
The Director of Music of University Christian Church reports to the Senior Minister and is employed “at will” and not under terms of a personal services contract.
• The Director of Music will attend weekly staff meetings, meetings of appropriate councils (primarily Worship Council) as needed, periodically attend board meetings, as well as other meetings as requested and as schedule allows.
• After six months, the Music Director is allotted paid vacation of two Wednesday rehearsals in combination with two Sunday worship services, to be determined with the Senior Minister in accord with UCC leave approval procedures. Any other leave will be arranged with thepermission of the Senior Minister or, in his absence, the President of the Board, in accord with UCC leave approval procedures.
• The Music Director or University Christian Church may terminate the employment with 30 days’ written notice by either party.
• The role description will be reviewed annually, during July and August of each year, by the Personnel Council in consultation with the Director of Music and the Senior Minister.
Qualifications
Candidates for the position of Director of Music must have a Master of Arts in Music or its equivalent and at least one year of experience in choral conducting and in church-related music.
Compensation
The Director of Music is a part-time position with an annual compensation to be negotiated, starting at $20,800 (may be negotiable depending on experience of candidate).
