Part-time Church Music Director

at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church in San Antonio Metro Area

Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church is a Christian community helping each other grow in the love of Jesus Christ. We currently practice a traditional liturgical worship style. We worship in the Silver Center – a local senior center. We are looking to adjust our worship style to be more of a blended worship, utilizing styles from contemporary sources, traditional sources, and global sources. We are looking for a worship director that can help move us in this direction while maintaining our Lutheran theological views.

Applicant must have experience leading and accompanying congregational singing on keyboard; also ability to lead/accompany choral music. We are open to separating the position of music director and choir director if needed.

Responsibilities:

Music Director Responsibilities:

1. Either plays the hymns/songs, liturgy for all worship services, including special services (such as Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Christmas Eve, Advent and Lent midweek services) or coordinates appropriate accompaniment for hymns/songs, liturgy, utilizing musicians within the congregation or outside musicians within the parameters of the budgeted amount
2. Rehearses with musicians as necessary
3. Participates in the monthly worship planning process and ensures each worship service is appropriate for the theme of the day or lectionary
4. Attends monthly worship team meetings
5. Prepares music department budget request annually In conjunction with the worship team
6. Arranges for coverage of duties when absent
7. Performs such other tasks that may be requested by Pastor or worship team

Choir Director:

1. Manages and maintains choral music library
2. Selects anthems for the choir appropriate to the liturgical season and lectionary text
3. Directs the adult choir in one rehearsal per week toward participation of worship each Sunday, September – May, and prepares the choir for special services throughout the Church year such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, as determined by consultation with Pastor and worship team
4. Arranges for and schedules appropriate music for worship during June, July and August, as needed

Skills and Qualifications:

1. Sufficient keyboard ability to play hymns, liturgy, and easy anthem accompaniments at sight
2. Bachelor of Music degree preferred
3. Knowledge of basic music theory
4. Ability to sing and play with accurate pitch and rhythm
5. Basic knowledge of the Lutheran Church, matching appropriate music with the themes of the Church Year
6. Previous experience in choral conducting preferred
7. Knowledge of appropriate church music (traditional, contemporary, folk, and gospel) and the ability to create a Lutheran service with blended styles
8. Willingness to creatively explore blended styles of worship while teaching and guiding the congregation into new music experiences
9. Ability to relate to others with good interpersonal skills
Hours and Compensation:
1. No less than 8 hours per week, no more than 14 hours per week, depending on seasonal worship schedule
2. Salary: $10,000 - $13,000, per year, dependent on education and experience
3. 2 weeks paid vacation, including 3 Sundays
4. Annual performance reviews will be conducted by the personnel team
