SoCo Women’s Chorus is currently recruiting for the position of Artistic Director for its 9th season. The Artistic Director will report to the Chair of the SoCo Women’s Chorus Board of Directors.
About SoCo Women’s Chorus:
The mission of SoCo Women’s Chorus is to give Austin area women the experience of musical artistry and excellence through choral singing and performing in a group which reflects the area’s diversity and is dedicated to community service.
Founded in 2012 as South Austin’s first auditioned women’s chorus, SoCo Women’s Chorus is a 40-woman ensemble that has successfully offered seven seasons of artistry to the Austin public with its most recent production Broadway, Baby! making waves at Ballet Austin’s Studio Theatre in May 2019. Through the years, SoCo Women’s Chorus has graced audiences across Ireland; at the Austin Central Public Library location; for the Susan G. Komen Luncheon as well as in downtown Austin; for the Wonder Women Expo upon special invitation by Austin Monthly Magazine; for the annual Austin Trail of Lights, for the annual Chuy’s Children Giving To Children “Blue Santa” Parade; for a U. S. District Judge’s Naturalization Ceremony at the LBJ Library, and for Austin’s nursing homes, senior centers, and the Adult Day Center at A.G.E. of Central Texas.
Details of the Position:
The Artistic Director develops and produces artistic programming, collaborations and concerts that enhance the mission of the organization. The Artistic Director role is a 15 hour per week contract position. Required availability is flexible hours, evenings and weekends with a weekly rehearsal during the chorus season on Tuesdays from 7 to 9pm. The contract will align with the chorus season, beginning on August 1, 2020 and expiring on May 31, 2021, with the opportunity to renew for future seasons at the discretion of the SoCo Women’s Chorus Board of Directors.

Responsibilities of the Position:
1. Promote the Chorus’ focus on its mission
Work with the Chorus, the Board, and volunteers to promote a positive atmosphere of empowerment and collaboration within the organization.
Network with other arts organizations, music directors, and local leaders to increase the visibility of the Chorus and to bring financial and creative resources back to the organization.

2. Design, coordinate, and direct Chorus programming
Organize the 9th season performance schedule to include 1) a Winter 2020 concert and 2) a Spring 2021 concert (format at your discretion).
Research appropriate music for season 9 and coordinate music selection and purchase.
Organize a rehearsal schedule at the beginning of the 9th concert season.
Conduct auditions and make member selections in August 2020 and May 2021.
Design each concert performance including theme development and integration of guest artists, ensembles, soloists and visual elements.
Serve as staff contact to Production Committee ensuring that technical needs, venue contracts, blocking, costuming, and staging details run smoothly.
Audition, select and coach soloists and small group ensembles, as needed
Identify and hire workshop presenters for vocal clinics and other workshops, as needed.
Contract with technicians and musicians for each concert project, as needed.

3. Manage administrative and artistic detail for outreach projects
Manage communication, logistics and planning details for Austin metro-area community performances.
Manage planning, schedule, communication, host contacts and programming for Chorus outreach tours.

4. Provide supervision for music-related staff and volunteers
Supervise the Accompanist; set rehearsal expectations and provide rehearsal resources.
Identify, coach, and support the activities of the Chorus officers and Chorus section leaders.

8. Participate in organizational development and communicate with Chorus leadership
Attend monthly Board meetings and provide a monthly AD report
Support Chorus development efforts through written narratives for grant applications/budgets and participation in chorus fundraisers
Prepare season budgets ahead of time in collaboration with the Board Treasurer and secure Board approval

Required Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

BA or Advanced Degree in Music with an emphasis in choral conducting or equivalent conducting experience (minimum 4-5 years).
Experience conducting or working with a community-based chorus and with singers of various musical skills and experience.
Strong ties to the Austin choral music community (preferred, not required)
Interest in and commitment to embracing the mission of the Chorus.
Ability to offer strong leadership skills as well as to balance work within a team setting.
Flexibility in working with a diverse group of volunteers and personalities.
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
Skilled in the use of Microsoft Word, G Suite, social media, and digital fundraising platforms

Compensation: $1400 per month, for the duration of the 10-month contract.
