HMC Artistic and Music Director – Conductor
Job Description (2019)

Position Summary
The Houston Masterworks Chorus (HMC) seeks an immediate part-time Artistic and Music Director – Conductor (Artistic Director) who can inspire, shape, and expand the artistic vision of the organization. The candidate should have passion, energy, and humor in leading the chorus and representing HMC in all public relations and community events. The Artistic Director will be responsible for the leadership and direction of all aspects of the chorus performances and will report to the Board of Directors while working collaboratively with the Executive Director.

Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
• Master’s in choral conducting, voice, or appropriate related field strongly preferred
• Experience conducting an orchestra with singers
• Experience networking with local performing groups and artists
• Experience and efficacy in long-range artistic planning
• Skilled in relationship building, management and conflict resolution
• Connections to the Houston area a plus

Artistic Management/Conducting
• Provides recommendations for HMC Board approval of all artistic aspects in the choice of repertoire and selection of venues. Repertoire should reflect strong interest in outreach and education by partnering with non-traditional groups and under-served communities and include new music, new partners, new audiences, and new venues.
• Advises the Executive Director in selection of appropriate rehearsal and performance venues.
• Develops, in collaboration with the Programming Committee, a three-year music program
calendar of major works for HMC and chorus tours.
• Provides exact musical score requirements (title, composer, publisher, and edition) one month
prior to each concert cycle as the Chorus provides their own scores.
• Prepares scores for chorus, orchestra, and soloists.
• Demonstrates well-established, efficient, and advanced skills in rehearsal technique;
balancing attention to technical details, overall interpretive goals, and scheduling
• Supervises all recording activities.
• Forms an auditioned chamber group from the chorus of singers committed to several extra
performances for donor and audience-building functions.

Audition and Rehearsal
• Holds auditions for new singers at least twice a year or as appropriate.
• Auditions the full chorus every 2-3 years according to the policies of the audition committee.
• Plans sectional rehearsals and assigns section directors as needed.
• Holds weekly rehearsals on Monday evenings during the season.

• Selects all artistic personnel (soloists, instrumentalists) within budget limitations.
• Produces concert programs and program notes for each concert with Executive Director and Marketing Committee.
• Coordinates with the Stage Manager and Executive Director on all matters regarding Chorus performance placement.

Administrative/Board Relations
• Regularly attends committee meetings and presents reports to the Board of Directors regarding the status of the artistic programs and projects.
• Works collaboratively with executive and program directors and staff.
• Demonstrates openness to the ideas of others.
• Inspires creativity and offers new ideas and directions that reflect Houston’s diversity.

Public Relations
• Participates in community activities that further the name recognition of the Chorus.
• Represents well the Chorus in media appearances upon request.
• Establishes goals and builds community partnerships that lead to an expanded audience.

Financial Management
• Develops, in collaboration with the Executive Director, a comprehensive artistic plan and specific repertoire by January 1st for the following concert season. Such plan will provide the basis for the annual budget, as well as serve the marketing and grant efforts.
• Operates within fiscal budgets and constraints.
• Participates in fundraising activities as requested.

Compensation and Benefits
This part-time paid position assumes the candidate has supplemental sources of income.
